On August 5th, 1949, Mann Gulch was the site of one of the most well-known fire incidents in history. Thirteen young men lost their lives, most of whom were part of an elite group of firefighters known as smokejumpers. 75 years later we have not forgotten their sacrifice or the lessons we learned about fire behavior, safety protocols, equipment, and crew training that are still relevant for all wildland firefighters today.

Schedule of Events

The 75th Memorial Tribute events will take place between Saturday, August 3rd and Monday, August 5th, 2024.

National Smokejumper Association Medallion Project

On the 75th Anniversary of the Mann Gulch tragedy, the National Smokejumper Association on, or around, August 5, 2024, will honor each of the young men who lost their lives by having association members visit each of the 13 individual smokejumper gravesites across the United States. The families of the smokejumpers will be invited to a memorial graveside event that will include a verbal tribute and the presentation of a commemorative booklet, and the placing of a wreath and a bronze memorial grave marker. Ten of the 13 men were U.S. military veterans who served in WWII prior to this tragedy. Local American Legion or the Veterans of Foreign Wars posts will provide color guards to also pay respects to these veterans.
